A 14-year-old student fatally stabbed a school staff member and injured a police officer during a routine bag check at a school in Nozan, northern France, near the city of Dijon. The teenager, who was immediately arrested at the scene, had previously been suspended for classroom disruptions and was ironically involved in an anti-bullying program as a student representative.
While fatal school attacks remain rare in France, concerns over rising violence in educational institutions are growing.
French President Emmanuel Macron posted on X that “France is in mourning, and the government is mobilized to crack down on crime.”
In response to increasing threats, the Ministry of Education introduced school bag checks earlier this year. According to the Interior Ministry, 186 knives have been confiscated since spring, and 32 individuals have been taken into custody as part of the initiative.
The tragedy has reignited the national debate on school safety and youth violence, with authorities pledging swift action to prevent further incidents.
