Gunfire erupted in the center of Nalchik, a popular tourist destination in southern Russia, following a stabbing incident involving a traffic officer, according to reports from RIA Novosti on Friday.

The shooting occurred around 6:00 p.m. local time on Lenin Avenue, where, according to initial police reports, there were casualties.

Authorities say the incident unfolded during an attempt to detain two suspects. One of the individuals was apprehended, while the other reportedly remains at large.

Kazbek Kokov, the head of the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic, stated that a man attacked a traffic police officer with a knife before being neutralized by law enforcement.

An investigation is ongoing, and security has been tightened in the area.
