Swedish diplomat Andreas von Bekerat is expected to take over as the new Head of the European Union Delegation to Serbia, following the departure of Emmanuel Giaufret, according to unofficial sources from European Western Balkans.
Currently serving as Sweden’s ambassador to Poland, von Bekerat has held various prominent positions during his nearly 30-year career in Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, as well as in diplomatic missions abroad.
He began his career at the Ministry in September 1999. From 2002 to 2006, he worked as a Europe Desk Officer in Stockholm, followed by a role as Political Counselor at the Swedish Embassy in Berlin until 2010.
In subsequent years, he served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Swedish Embassy in London. In September 2013, he was appointed ambassador to Ukraine, a position he held until September 2016. During the Maidan uprising, he was one of the European diplomats who condemned police violence.
From November 2016 to August 2017, von Bekerat led the Department for Conflict and Humanitarian Affairs in Stockholm. He later became Head of the Department for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. In October 2023, he was named Sweden’s ambassador to Warsaw.
Von Bekerat is fluent in English, German, and Russian, and also has working knowledge of French, Polish, and Dutch.
