U.S. President Joe Biden stated that working on a ceasefire in Lebanon is possible, although it will be more challenging to achieve one in Gaza.

He made this statement during a one-day visit to Berlin, where he discussed Ukraine with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

When journalists asked about the timing and manner of Israel’s response to Iranian rocket attacks, Biden confirmed understanding the situation but did not provide further details, as reported by the BBC.

On October 1st, Iran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, most of which were intercepted by the Israeli military.

Lebanon’s acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati has rejected any move by Iran to hold negotiations on implementing the UN resolution concerning Southern Lebanon, calling it a “clear interference” in his country’s internal affairs.

Earlier this month, Israel initiated a ground operation in Lebanon aimed at weakening Hezbollah, which has been exchanging cross-border fire with Israel since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip against Hamas, a militant group and Iranian ally in the region.

While both the U.S. and the European Union (EU) have designated Hamas as a terrorist organization, the U.S. has labeled Hezbollah as a terrorist group, and the EU has blacklisted its military wing but not its political party, which holds seats in the Lebanese parliament.

Responding to comments by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Qalibaf on October 17th, asserting Tehran’s readiness to negotiate a UN resolution.

Calling for Southern Lebanon’s border area to be free from international weapons or troops, Mikati expressed surprise at this stance on October 18th.

He stated that this “represents a clear interference in Lebanese affairs and an attempt to establish a rejected guardianship over Lebanon,” in an interview with the French newspaper Le Figaro.
