The opposition in Novi Sad, which includes all opposition councilor groups in the city assembly, has called on citizens to stand still for 14 minutes on Friday, from 11:52 to 12:06, as a sign of solidarity with the families who lost their loved ones in the tragedy at the railway station.
“If you’re in your car, stop at 11:52, turn on your hazard lights, and get out of the car. If you’re at work, step outside the building at that time. If you’re at university, leave the class and return later. Students should spend those 14 minutes in the schoolyard, doctors should declare a break, and private entrepreneurs should also join. Everyone should stop during this time, because the lives of those 14 people stopped in an instant! We urge the people of Novi Sad to show solidarity with the victims’ families and empathy for their loss,” said the opposition in their statement.
The opposition is also calling for civil disobedience, criticizing the prosecutor’s office, which they say is under pressure and obstructed by the authorities, for not yet declaring anyone as a suspect for the tragedy at the Novi Sad Railway Station, where 14 people lost their lives.
According to the statement, Friday, November 15, will mark exactly 14 days since 14 lives were tragically lost at 11:52, all because someone, as they claimed, rushed to take pictures for an election campaign before the building had received its occupancy permit. Someone wanted to profit from savings on materials, someone lacked expertise but had a purchased diploma and a significant party membership, and someone created a society of negligence, corruption, indifference, and irresponsibility.
“The authorities are trying to make the victims forgotten and shift the public focus to other issues. We cannot forget anyone, because any one of us could have been under that canopy – our child, brother, sister, mother, father. They gave their lives for us. We will not allow the regime to forget the victims! They won’t get away with it! Their hands are bloody. They are guilty! They will answer for it!” the statement emphasized.
The statement was signed by NADA for Novi Sad – Novi DSS – POKS, Kreni Promeni – Novi Sad, Srbija Centar – BRAVO Novi Sad, Narodni Pokret Srbije – Ekoloski Ustanak, Stranka Slobode i Pravde, Pokret za Preokret, Demokratska Stranka, Pokret Slobodnih Građana, Zeleno Levi Front, Grupa Građana Heroji – Misa Baculov, and the councilor of the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina – VOJVODANI.
