German Chancellor Discusses Ukraine War with Russian President
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated today that his recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed no change in Putin’s position regarding the war in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters at Berlin’s airport before departing for the G20 summit in Brazil, Scholz remarked:
“It was worthwhile to speak with Putin to dispel any illusions that the West might withdraw its support for Ukraine.”
Rationale Behind the Call
Scholz explained that he initiated the call because he believes European leaders should maintain communication with Russia, especially after Donald Trump’s potential re-entry into the U.S. presidency could lead to regular U.S.-Russia contact. According to Scholz, it’s important that European voices remain part of the dialogue.
“The conversation was detailed, but it confirmed that little has changed in Putin’s stance on the war—which is not good news,” Scholz noted.
Calls for Negotiations and Troop Withdrawal
During the hour-long conversation, Scholz urged Putin to demonstrate a willingness to negotiate with Ukraine for a fair and lasting peace. He also reiterated demands for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory.
Engagement with Zelensky Prior to Putin Call
Prior to speaking with Putin, Scholz held discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This sequence highlights Germany’s balanced diplomatic approach, maintaining dialogue with both sides of the conflict.
Last Direct Communication Since 2022
This was the first conversation between Scholz and Putin since December 2022, marking a rare instance of direct communication amid continued tensions between Russia and Western nations over the ongoing war.
Scholz’s call underscores Europe’s commitment to supporting Ukraine while emphasizing the importance of dialogue, even with starkly opposing viewpoints.
