Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic addressed the nation, expressing his deep understanding of Vladimir Putin’s character. He confidently stated that if all other options are exhausted, Putin would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons.
Discussing the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Vucic emphasized Serbia’s unwavering stance while warning that the risk of nuclear war is at an all-time high.
“Despite immense pressure, we have stood firm in our position. I believe we’ve adopted the most responsible policy. Now more than ever, it’s vital to focus on dialogue, ceasefires, and peace because continuing down this road leads only to global catastrophe—something I regretfully predicted,” Vucic said. He added, “Today, missiles have struck the Bryansk region, and attacks on Russian supplies will continue. Each step forward inches us closer to nuclear confrontation.”
Vucic also warned that if Moscow or Russian forces are put in jeopardy, Putin would act decisively without hesitation.
“We’re not ready for such a scenario. Currently, Serbia has 257,000 shelter spaces, but we need to upgrade our infrastructure to accommodate 1.5 million people in case of emergencies,” he said.
When asked how Serbia would respond to the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Vucic reaffirmed Serbia’s neutral position.
“We have no intention of taking sides. Serbia is a neutral country, and we’re paying a high price for our neutrality. The weapons we acquire are among the most advanced in the world,” he said. “Our focus remains on protecting our country, our citizens, and our families. If others want to fight, that’s their choice—we will not.”
Vucic also announced that he would attend the May 9th Victory Day celebration in Moscow, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He described the opportunity as a great honor.
“If nothing catastrophic happens—and I’m less certain of that than ever, though I remain hopeful—it would be a tremendous honor to stand on Red Square for this historic event, just as I did five years ago for the 75th anniversary. Back then, it was just me and Prime Minister Netanyahu representing foreign leaders. I take pride in the role the Serbian people played in the fight against fascism,” Vucic said in response to questions about the event.
He stressed that the Serbian people were among the few in the region who stood side by side with the Russian people against Nazism from the very beginning.
“This legacy gives us an even greater responsibility to preserve the truth about the fight against fascism. May 9th is still a long way off, but I deeply appreciate President Putin’s invitation. I’ve told him that unless something extraordinary occurs, I will attend with great pride. I also discussed this with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who will be my guest soon, and he plans to attend as well,” Vucic concluded.
