Speaker of the Serbian Parliament, Ana Brnabić, has expressed outrage over what she described as the European Union’s inexcusable silence in response to an event in Croatia where fascist slogans were reportedly chanted during a concert by singer Marko Perković Thompson.
“It’s been more than 24 hours — each hour feeling like an eternity — and still no comment or reaction from the EU concerning the alarming glorification of fascism witnessed in Croatia,” Brnabić wrote on social media platform X.
She highlighted that the concert held in Zagreb was attended by over 400,000 people, nearly one-tenth of the country’s total population. “It’s shocking to see such a massive crowd enthusiastically chanting fascist-era slogans in a European country, decades after the world saw the horrors of Nazi ideology. Equally disturbing is the EU’s complete lack of response,” she added.
Brnabić stressed that the chant “Za dom spremni,” closely associated with the Ustaše regime, echoed just 100 kilometers away from Jasenovac, the site of one of Europe’s most notorious concentration camps. “Thousands of Serbs, Jews, and Roma were slaughtered there — some estimates say over 100,000 — including children,” she said.
“That chant, ‘Za dom spremni,’ is historically no different than shouting ‘Sieg Heil’ — and it was celebrated in the heart of Europe without a single word of condemnation,” Brnabić continued.
She urged the European Union to respond firmly: “There must be zero tolerance for this kind of rhetoric. It endangers not just Serbia but the stability of the entire region. The EU’s silence is thunderous — and unacceptable.”
Овом концерту, одржаном у Загребу,… pic.twitter.com/JCf48DEDYx
