Chinese scientists have reportedly developed and tested a new type of non-nuclear hydrogen bomb that produces an intense, long-lasting fireball—surpassing traditional explosives in thermal output, according to the South China Morning Post.

The device, weighing just 2kg (4.4 lbs), is primarily made from magnesium hydride and was engineered by the 705 Research Institute of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), a major developer of underwater weapons. The research was published in a recent edition of the Journal of Projectiles, Rockets, Missiles and Guidance.

During field testing, the bomb generated a fireball that exceeded 1,000°C (1,832°F) and burned for more than two seconds—much longer than conventional TNT-based explosives.

Unlike traditional bombs that rely on blast pressure for damage, this hydrogen-based device causes destruction through extreme heat. When detonated, magnesium hydride releases large amounts of hydrogen gas, feeding a sustained and scorching fireball.

Researcher Wang Xuefeng from CSSC stated that the technology allows for precise control of the blast’s intensity and makes it effective in evenly destroying wide-area targets.

Experts suggest the weapon could function similarly to thermobaric bombs or napalm, making it especially effective against fortified positions and armored vehicles.

Previously, the production of magnesium hydride was expensive and complex. However, China has recently introduced a more efficient and safer manufacturing method and now operates a facility capable of producing 150 tons of the compound annually.
