During his official visit to the White House, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told U.S. President Donald Trump that Berlin is committed to increasing pressure on Russia in an effort to help bring an end to the war in Ukraine, which has now entered its fourth year.

“You’re aware of the support we’ve provided to Ukraine, and we are determined to step up pressure on Russia,” Merz said in his remarks alongside President Trump.

In a gesture highlighting shared heritage, Merz presented Trump with a framed copy of his grandfather’s German birth record — Friedrich Trump, born in 1869.

“Our people have entrusted us with a mission, and part of that mission is to maintain strong ties between our nations,” Trump said, thanking the German leader for his visit.

The U.S. President also praised Germany’s increased defense spending, noting it as a positive development. “I know you’re now spending more on defense — significantly more — and that’s a very good thing,” said Trump, once again urging NATO allies to step up their commitments.
