Greenpeace activists removed a wax statue of French President Emmanuel Macron from the Grevin Museum in Paris and placed it outside the Russian Embassy as part of a protest targeting what they described as Macron’s inconsistent support for Ukraine. The stunt took place on Monday and was reportedly carried out by three activists who entered the museum posing as tourists, disguised themselves as staff, and quickly took the €40,000 figure. They transported the statue to the embassy while filming the entire operation.

Outside the embassy, the activists displayed the statue alongside banners condemning France’s continued imports of Russian liquefied natural gas and fertilizers. Greenpeace France’s executive director, Jean-Francois Julliard, accused Macron of “playing a double game” — criticizing Russia on the one hand while still allowing economic ties to persist on the other. Despite France being one of Ukraine’s main backers since the conflict escalated in February 2022 and Macron repeatedly pushing for deeper Western involvement, Greenpeace claims this support is undermined by ongoing trade with Russia.

Si seulement, ils avaient pu voler l’original plutôt. 😅😅 pic.twitter.com/23FL6G59sX

The organization said in a statement that it had only “borrowed” the statue and intended to return it. However, the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that an investigation has been opened for “theft to the detriment of the museum,” though no arrests have been made. The Grevin Museum has not yet issued an official response.
Russia designated Greenpeace International as an “undesirable organization” in May 2023, accusing it of promoting political agendas and interfering in internal affairs with the aim of causing economic disruption.
