The Director of the Office for Public and Cultural Diplomacy, Arno Gujon, stated that during his multi-day meetings in Washington with representatives of American political institutions, he highlighted the catastrophic humanitarian situation for Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija.
As well as the need to further improve economic and political relations between Serbia and the U.S. in mutual interest.
“I highlighted the importance for the Republic of Serbia to preserve our territorial integrity and sovereignty, but I also pointed out that, despite this, with mutual respect, we can enhance economic and even political relations, which is in the interest of both countries,” Gujon stated.
The Director of the Office, who held a series of meetings with representatives of political institutions during his official stay in Washington, mentioned that they discussed various topics ranging from the past to the present.
“It was important to remind and emphasize that the ties between Serbia and America go far back in history, that our diplomatic relations were established as early as 1882, and that Serbs and Americans stood together on the same victorious side during the First and Second World Wars, fighting for justice and freedom,” Gujon said.
He also added that the discussions touched on the differences between Washington and Belgrade that arose at the end of the 20th century regarding events in the Balkans.
During his working visit, in addition to discussions with representatives of political institutions, Gujon also met with American journalists in Washington.
He officially opened the “Serbian Film Festival DC 2024,” which is organized under the auspices of the Office for Public and Cultural Diplomacy.
This significant cultural event was the occasion for a reception at the Embassy of Serbia, which also initiated the launch of the festival. At the event, Gujon addressed guests, including members of the diplomatic corps, directors, and actors.
The day before, while opening the festival, Gujon stated that Serbia, through this major event showcasing Serbian cinema, culture, and art, is for the first time in the 142-year-long tradition of Serbian-American diplomatic relations, presenting itself through cultural diplomacy.
