Former Prime Minister of Kosovo, Isa Mustafa, believes that the newly elected U.S. President, Donald Trump, will be decisive when it comes to resolving the relationship between Kosovo and Serbia and will not tolerate delays in the process, as reported by Gazeta Ekspres.
Mustafa emphasized that during Trump’s previous term, he had not heard anyone from his administration propose territorial exchange as a potential solution for normalizing relations between Belgrade and Pristina.
“The previous Trump administration had the idea of reaching an agreement that promotes economic development, employment, and poverty reduction in both countries. I never heard representatives of that administration asking for a territorial exchange. Whether someone from Kosovo offered such an option is a different matter,” said Mustafa, as quoted by Kosovo Online.
He believes that Trump’s new administration will be more efficient in addressing the issues between Serbia and Kosovo.
“I think that the Trump administration will be more effective and decisive in reaching and implementing an agreement with Serbia. Generally, the discourse of Republicans is very concrete and understandable: If you don’t care about peace and stability, then why should we care about you? That’s why we must count on the logic that Trump will not tolerate a process that is delayed on both sides,” Mustafa warned.
He stated that it is in Kosovo’s interest to maintain close relations with the United States.
However, he pointed out that the current government of Kosovo is ignoring the U.S., while Serbia has taken a different approach.
“First, we must understand that relations with the U.S. are based on political interests, and from that, we must assess who has the most interest in keeping those relations close. Of course, it’s Kosovo. If we act contrary to this, we are violating our own interests. Just look at how Serbia behaves toward the U.S., a country that bombed it in 1999, and how the government of a country that was liberated that year ignores them. One doesn’t need to read history to understand that America doesn’t tolerate being disregarded, especially by those it has helped,” concluded Mustafa.
