Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, plans to spend election night at Howard University in Washington, as confirmed by three sources familiar with her plans.
A source noted that the campaign intends to stage its election night event in the Quad, although the specific location on campus might still be subject to change.
NBC News has previously reported that Harris’s team was considering the university, where Harris earned her bachelor’s degree, for her election night base.
Harris has deep connections to the historically Black college. In a recent article for The Hilltop, the university’s student newspaper, Harris shared numerous cherished memories from her time at the university, affectionately known as “The Mecca.”
“My years at Howard profoundly shaped who I am today. It’s at Howard where we learn that we are destined for greatness and that we must earnestly strive to reach our potential every day,” Harris expressed.
In 1986, she also joined Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first historically Black sorority, during her time at Howard.
Meanwhile, Republican nominee Donald Trump’s campaign has disclosed plans to hold an election night watch party at a convention center in West Palm Beach, Florida, near his resort. However, specific details about Trump’s election night activities remain undisclosed.
Harris rarely campaigns in Washington, D.C. The announcement of her election night plans coincides with her scheduled speech on the Ellipse near the White House.
In her upcoming speech, Harris is set to call on Americans to “turn the page” on the divisive politics of her Republican opponent, according to a senior campaign official. This speech comes in the wake of Trump’s rally at the Ellipse, held just before the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
