The European Commission today welcomed the formation of the new Serbian government and expressed hope that it will quickly take the necessary steps to maintain Serbia’s path toward the EU.
“Our goal remains to support Serbia’s progress on its path to the EU,” said the Commission spokesperson.
He added that a “credible and tangible progress in key reforms” is needed to open the next phases in the accession process, particularly in the areas of the rule of law, media freedom, anti-corruption efforts, electoral reform, and democratic institutions.
He also mentioned that the EU accession process requires intense efforts from the entire society and should be “an inclusive national project owned by all.”
Serbia’s newly elected Prime Minister, Djuro Macut, took office today from the outgoing Prime Minister, Milos Vucevic, after the Serbian Assembly elected the new government on Wednesday, which will have 31 members.
