In Düsseldorf, Germany, police discovered that a pizzeria was selling cocaine along with pizza orders when customers asked for item number 40 on the menu.
“This was one of the best-selling pizzas,” said Michael Graf von Moltke, a criminal director, during a press briefing in Düsseldorf.
Food inspectors first became suspicious in March and alerted the police.
Surveillance by drug squad officers soon revealed why pizza number 40 was especially popular, Moltke explained to reporters on Monday, as reported by the German news agency DPA.
When police visited the apartment of the pizzeria manager, the 36-year-old reportedly threw a bag of drugs out of the window, which “fell right into the arms of the police officers,” according to Düsseldorf police.
The bag contained 1.6 kilograms (3.5 pounds) of cocaine, 400 grams (14.1 ounces) of cannabis, and 268,000 euros ($290,378) in cash.
Police said the restaurant manager, who was released from detention after a few days, soon reopened his business and started selling pizza number 40 with the cocaine side order again.
This gave investigators an opportunity to look into the supply chain. After several weeks, around 150 officers busted an entire drug network in western Germany, arresting three individuals, including the 22-year-old leader of the operation, and raided the homes and businesses of another 12 suspects.
During the raids, authorities found two cannabis plantations in Mönchengladbach and Solingen, holding 300 and 60 plants respectively. They also found knives, guns, cash, and expensive watches.
The pizzeria manager was arrested while attempting to flee the country and remains in custody.
Police did not disclose how much the pizzeria charged for the special pizza.
