President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, arrived today in the Republic of Azerbaijan, welcomed at Baku Airport by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Labor and Social Protection, Sahil Babayev.
During his visit, President Vucic will meet with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and hold additional meetings with global leaders. Vucic will then attend the United Nations COP29 Climate Summit, which begins today in Baku and runs until November 22. The summit will gather leaders, business representatives, and civil society groups aiming to accelerate actions addressing the climate crisis.
The summit’s official opening ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow at Baku’s Olympic Stadium, with addresses from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Following the opening, more than 20 national leaders will speak at the summit. President Vucic is set to be the second speaker, following Kazakhstan’s President Kassym Tokayev.
COP29 comes at a time of record global temperatures and extreme weather events affecting communities worldwide. The summit’s agenda will focus on securing financing for countries to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and safeguard communities from climate impacts.
Key COP29 priorities include agreements on climate funding allocations, ensuring all countries have resources for more robust climate action, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and building resilient communities.
Speakers at the summit will include Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Polish President Andrzej Duda, and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. Other confirmed leaders include Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, European Council President Charles Michel, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
Additional participants include Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Italy will be represented by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Egypt by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Albania by Prime Minister Edi Rama, North Macedonia by President Gordana Siljanovski-Davkova, Montenegro by President Jakov Milatović, and Bosnia and Herzegovina by Presidency Chair Denis Bećirović.
Azerbaijan holds the rotating presidency of COP29 as the host of this year’s UN climate conference, representing Central and Eastern Europe. Brazil will host COP30 next year.
