Students involved in the blockade announced tonight that they are ending their protest outside the Radio-Television of Serbia (RTS) building. The decision came after the Committee for Culture and Information canceled the previous competition and opened a new one to select members of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) Council.
“We have a new REM Council competition now. With this, the RTS blockade is over after 14 days,” stated the protesting students from the Faculty of Dramatic Arts (FDU) in a post on social media platform X. Demonstrators gathered outside the RTS headquarters on Takovska Street chanted, “The competition is open, RTS is free.”
According to Tanjug news agency, the students initially planned to maintain the blockade overnight but announced that traffic would resume in the morning. Streets around the RTS building, including Takovska and Kneza Višeslava near Košutnjak, remained blocked with containers at key intersections.
The Committee for Culture and Information initiated the new selection process for REM Council members following demands from opposition MPs and the protesting students, who had blocked RTS since April 14. The move aims to address concerns over media independence and regulatory transparency.
