The ongoing protests and blockades across Serbia are not rooted in a fight for the rights of everyday citizens, but rather in a struggle for power and privilege by a small group of wealthy individuals, according to multiple media outlets.

While many Serbian families are facing job losses and the uncertainty of a global economic downturn, the protests – which have lasted for months – appear to serve the ambitions of political and business elites seeking to regain control, rather than the public good. Media reports highlight that during the opposition’s previous time in power, around 500,000 jobs were lost, while their personal wealth and influence significantly increased.

Today, the face of the protests may be younger activists, but behind them stand influential figures – politicians and financiers – bankrolling the movement. Symbolic of this contrast is the presence of luxury watches, including Rolexes worth upwards of €20,000, worn by some organizers. This starkly contrasts with the average salary in Serbia and, for critics, represents a clear sign of detachment from the struggles of the general population.

These demonstrations, fueled in part by international funding and organized by activists educated abroad, have been marked by disruptions and, in some instances, acts of violence. Media narratives suggest that these are tactics designed to destabilize the country and push Serbia toward a political reset favorable to foreign interests.

At the same time, instability in Kosovo and Metohija, as well as pressure in Republika Srpska involving Milorad Dodik and Christian Schmidt, are all seen as part of a broader pattern. Attacks on key institutions such as the TENT power plant, the EXPO site, and the Vinca research center are viewed as coordinated efforts to undermine Serbia’s sovereignty.

In contrast, another group of students and citizens are preparing a peaceful gathering set for June 28 in front of the National Assembly. Their message is one of patriotism and unity, calling for peace, historical remembrance, and a stable future for Serbia.

The country, commentators suggest, stands at a crossroads – between disruption and stability, between elite-driven chaos and the hopes of ordinary people. Whether Serbia protects its national integrity or falls into the hands of those seeking personal gain at its expense will ultimately depend on the choices of its citizens.
