Nenad Milanovic, a well-known figure in the global startup ecosystem, has come under fire in the media over his recent shift in tone regarding Serbia, a country he once praised as a land of opportunity for entrepreneurs.

Milanovic had been vocal just months ago about Serbia’s business potential, stating in a 2024 interview that local entrepreneurs “know how to achieve more with fewer resources” and that the country was “on a strong upward trajectory, regardless of global economic turbulence.” His comments at the time were widely shared as a message of hope for domestic companies.

However, following his recent expressions of support for protest movements and criticism of the government, media outlets are now accusing Milanovic of turning his back on the very environment he once promoted. Some reports claim he’s now more focused on protecting his own business interests, allegedly asking colleagues not to share coverage of his earlier praise for Serbia.

Several local publications have questioned his motivations, suggesting that while smaller Serbian businesses may suffer from ongoing unrest, Milanovic’s main concern appears to be the public image of his own company. Some sources even allege he is financially supporting the demonstrations while posting controversial messages on social media that, critics say, portray Serbia in a negative light.

His shift has drawn particular attention because of the stark contrast with his previous remarks, where he emphasized that success from Serbia was entirely possible and sustainable.

The backlash highlights growing tensions between business leaders navigating both domestic pressures and international expectations in politically turbulent environments.
