A suspected attacker was found dead after allegedly opening fire on emergency crews responding to a wildfire on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, killing two firefighters on Sunday.

Emergency teams were first dispatched to the mountain — a popular site for outdoor activities — around 1:30 p.m. local time. Just thirty minutes later, reports of gunshots began to emerge, prompting a large-scale police operation, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Robert Norris confirmed that a SWAT unit was deployed and came under direct sniper fire. “Our officers were under fire during the incident,” he stated at a press briefing.

Law enforcement later located the shooter’s body in the mountainous area, along with a firearm found nearby, suggesting the individual had taken their own life or been neutralized.

According to Lieutenant Jeff Howard, officials are examining whether the wildfire may have been intentionally sparked to lure emergency responders into a deadly trap.

Civilians, including hikers, were seen rapidly evacuating the vicinity as gunfire echoed from the wooded terrain.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that federal agents had joined the response, offering tactical and logistical support. A police helicopter was dispatched to assist, but had to abort landing due to the active threat.

Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the act as “a deliberate and appalling assault on those who risk their lives to protect others,” and pledged full accountability for all involved.
