On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a one-hour phone call during which they reportedly touched on several global issues, including Iran and Ukraine.
President Trump, who celebrated his 79th birthday the same day, shared details of the call on his platform, Truth Social. “President Putin phoned this morning — he was kind enough to wish me a Happy Birthday. But more importantly, we had a long discussion about Iran, a region he knows quite a bit about,” Trump wrote.
He mentioned that while Iran dominated the conversation, the war in Ukraine was briefly mentioned and would be addressed in greater detail “next week.” Trump added, “We both agree that the conflict between Israel and Iran needs to come to an end. I told him that the same should apply to his conflict as well.”
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov described the dialogue as “open, constructive, and most of all, beneficial.” He noted that Putin criticized Israel’s recent military strikes on Iran, which took place shortly before the sixth round of nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington was scheduled to begin on June 15.
Ushakov also confirmed the birthday exchange and emphasized that both presidents expressed appreciation for the direct and pragmatic nature of their relationship. He said that this rapport allows them to tackle complex bilateral and international issues with mutual respect and a focus on results.
