US President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Russia’s deadly missile attacks on Kyiv, which killed at least 12 people and injured dozens overnight. While calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to “STOP” the strikes in a Truth Social post, Trump did not specify whether the US would take further action against Moscow.
Speaking alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre at the White House, Trump emphasized his focus on ending the war, stating he has “no allegiance to anybody” except to “saving lives.” He acknowledged frustration with Putin but suggested waiting a week to assess progress toward a potential deal, warning that “things will happen” if attacks continue.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who cut short a visit to South Africa following the assault, urged stronger US pressure on Russia to secure a ceasefire. He stressed that Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate at all represents a “huge compromise,” with a ceasefire as the essential first step. Zelensky rejected concessions on occupied territories, noting it is Ukrainians, not Russia, who are “running out of patience.”
The attacks came amid growing US pressure on Ukraine to accept territorial compromises, including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. Vice President JD Vance recently outlined a proposed deal requiring both sides to cede some controlled land, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the urgency of ending the war after the Kyiv strikes.
Zelensky’s South Africa trip marked improved ties with a nation historically neutral in the conflict. President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated Pretoria’s commitment to engaging all parties but avoided endorsing territorial concessions. The visit reflects Ukraine’s push to diversify alliances as US support under Trump becomes increasingly conditional.
Trump’s remarks highlight the fragile state of negotiations, with Ukraine resisting land-for-peace demands and Russia escalating military pressure. The White House continues to frame a ceasefire as achievable but warns that delays will only prolong the bloodshed.
